According to United Nations statistics, AIDS has orphaned more than 11 million African children, half of whom are between the ages of 10 and 14. In Lesotho, there are an estimated 150,000 orphans (ages 0 to 17, due to AIDS). S.H.I.P. Aid visited four orphanages and distributed clothing, toys, children’s books and school supplies.
Lesotho Facts:
- Nearly one out of every nine babies born will not survive to his/her fifth birthday
- Total number of orphans estimated to be well over 92,000. These orphans are especially vulnerable to “physical and sexual abuse as well as psychological trauma.”
